How to Prep Your Car For Winter

As colder weather approaches, drivers from Mishawaka to Niles need to go through their winter preparation checklist. In some cases even more so than normal, proper vehicle care is vital during the colder, winter months. Keeping your vehicle in good health, and making sure it’s fit for the winter conditions, will ensure your safety and give you peace of mind driving through the snow and ice. Read through these tips for winterizing your vehicle, and make sure to utilize our expert service department for all your vehicle needs.

Vehicle Inspections for Winter

Winter driving is especially rough on many parts of your vehicle, so it is critically important to make sure all your parts and fluids are operating at optimal levels. Make sure to get these checked by trained professionals to help properly prepare for winter:

  • Tires: Make sure to check that your tire pressure is at the proper level according to your owner’s manual, and be aware of your tread depth. Take a penny and slide it into the treads, with Lincoln’s head down inward towards the tire — if you can see all of his head, you should most likely replace your tires
  • Fluid Levels: Keep your engine coolant and antifreeze levels topped off to prevent your engine from possibly freezing during frigid temps. Also make sure to use proper winter weather windshield wiper fluid that is cold temp resistant, and make sure you keep up on your engine oil, and swap to a cold weather appropriate oil as well
  • Battery: Check to make sure you’re battery is in good shape, as an aging battery can quickly become a dead battery with the arrival of one cold morning. If needed, replace your battery so you aren’t stranded on the South Bend streets

Properly Supply Your Vehicle

If you happen to experience the unfortunate event of a breakdown in the winter, you’ll want to make sure your car is stocked with the proper supplies. Keep these emergency supplies handy so you’re prepared in the worst case scenario:

  • Blankets
  • Snow brush/ice scraper
  • High protein snacks
  • Shovel
  • Full set of winter gear (coats, hats, gloves, etc.)
  • Secured, extra case of coolant
  • Sand or kitty litter to help gain traction on the ice
