Summer Maintenance Tips

You might assume that your trusty car will be around forever, but in order to have a long-lasting relationship with your car, you need to make sure you keep it in good working order. Car care is important year-round, but especially in the summer when the temperatures soar and your car has to work harder to keep cool. Here’s how to take care of your car this summer so it will take care of you.

Get A Check-Up

You get regular check-ups with the doctor to make sure you’re in good health, so why wouldn’t you do the same for your car? Summer is the perfect time to get your car checked out to make sure it’s fully functioning and able to keep going through the hot and humid months. At the very least, you should get your oil changed to ensure your engine runs smoothly, and your tires rotated to ensure even wear. Check your owner’s manual to see how often your manufacturer recommends these services.

Additionally, you should have your windshield wipers inspected and replaced if necessary. They have to work hard over the summer to keep your window clear of dust, dirt, and dead bugs. You should also have your air conditioning checked out to make sure it’s in good working order — the last thing you want is to deal with the August heat in Indiana with no A/C.

Finally, have your mechanic check your engine and cabin air filters to make sure everything’s functioning as it should be. Have them top up your coolant if necessary, as well as your brake fluid and power-steering fluid.

Preventative Care

In addition to regular maintenance, there are some DIY things you can do in the summer to prevent future issues from occurring. First of all, wash your car regularly to get rid of dirt and grime, which can lead to premature rust; this not only looks unsightly but can also damage your car’s structural integrity.

Consider getting a windshield cover to protect your dashboard and car interior from fading. It can also keep your car cooler if you’re parked in full sun (but try to park in the shade unless you like the feeling of stepping into an oven when you get behind the wheel).
